Getting spirits high, and the whole school fired up for homecoming is quite the task, and what better way to do that than a bonfire? The bonfire has been a homecoming tradition at Palmer for decades. After a lengthy break, the tradition returned.
While the bonfire is not the focal point of homecoming week, when it was removed, there was a void. The students loved the tradition, and when it was halted, it was missed. Brian Osborne, Palmer Class of ‘91, states, “It was really a big thing, and it rose our school spirit.” The bonfire is like a dance with no ticket, a pep-rally with no cheerleaders, a party on a Monday.
The bonfire coming back was a great kickoff for the week’s festivities, Spirit Week, Powder Puff, the football game, and the Homecoming Dance. From classic characters to feathered fedoras, this year’s theme was Clue. “There were around twelve options,” says Mr. Keith Ferguson, a freshman and senior teacher involved with Student Council.
What does the bonfire’s future look like? It will almost certainly return. Hopefully, even bigger and better than before. Olivia Sheridan, Palmer Senior, says, “I am so glad we brought back the tradition of the homecoming bonfire at Palmer. It was such a great addition to homecoming week to get everyone excited for the dance. I had a great time and hope this tradition continues!”
