Over the years the topic of abortion is heavily discussed, with each opinion varying in some way or another. Roe V Wade a case that originated in 1973 that was the stepping stone for our regulations to abortion. In Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decided two important things:
- The United States Constitution provides a fundamental “right to privacy” that protects a person’s right to choose whether to have an abortion.
- The abortion right is not absolute. It must be balanced against the government’s interests in protecting health and prenatal life.
However in 2022 the supreme court overturned this decision which led to abortion bans in 14 states meaning 1 in 3 women now live in states where abortion is illegal even given high risk medical emergencies. In a recent story now circulating in the news a Georgia women had taken abortion pills and encountered a rare complication; she had not expelled all of the fetal tissue from her body. She showed up at Piedmont Henry Hospital in need of a routine procedure to clear it from her uterus, a procedure that the hospital was fully equipped to due. It took 20 hours for doctors to finally operate. By then, it was too late. Her state had made performing the procedure a felony, with few exceptions.
The Roe V. Wade case poses problems with either opinion and most think there will be no good 50/50 answer. Legislators and politicians have talked about reviewing this decision soon after it was made. Many netizens believe we should be taking preventable measures when it comes to the health of the parent. However with so many opposing opinions the matter remains at a stand still.
