Finals severely impact a teen’s mental health; we see students skipping class more and more when finals week comes creeping in. A fact from psychology degree guide tells us that final exams are a common cause of academic stress. Students may even begin to have a negative thought about the tests, doubting their performance, and overall increasing stress often this turns into anxiety and could lead to depression. Palmer English teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Green, was asked, “When finals come around do you see more students skip classes?” She responded, “Yes, because they are stressed about the test.”
Finals often bring a grade decline. Students take a lot of time studying and not prioritizing physical and mental well-being. Palmer student Taytum Soppe-Cope says, “Yes, I often notice my grades drop during finals week because I’m so overwhelmed with studying that I procrastinate any other work.”
Stress and anxiety impact a teen’s physical health just as much as their mental health. A statistic from website My Health Alberta says that long term stress can make teens more prone to sickness, disease, and having trouble sleeping. A quote from a Palmer student Gavin Clubs says, “I experience extreme migraines the week before finals.”
