Wednesday last week residents reported a rapid growing fire around the beach towns of Santa Monica and Malibu that moved through thousands of acres of land. There are reports of separate fires that broke out in Altadena near Pasadena and a smaller blaze named the Hurst Fire that began in Sylmar, in the San Fernando Valley northwest of downtown Los Angeles and consumed about 500 acres. The cause of these fires is currently under investigation by officials under rumors of arson.
The Los Angeles Police Department has confirmed to NewsNation that the Kenneth Fire is now being investigated as an arson case. The wildfire has been challenging to maintain based on the extremely dry and windy weather that is a breeding ground for an uncontrolled fire. Thousands of structures have burned to the ground, from homes and grocery stores to restaurants and beloved landmarks in the Los Angeles community along the Pacific Coast Highway. While firefighters and rescuers continue to sweep the street the death toll rises and the number of those injured is unclear. The extent of the damage is still being accessed as the fires continue to damage L.A.
Los Angeles County has provided preliminary maps showing damage assessments for both the Eaton and Palisades fires. Officials said the maps are updated daily. The color-coded maps show structures that are destroyed, structures with major to minor damage, those affected and those with no damage. Visit recovery.lacounty.gov to view the maps.
