Bathrooms at Palmer should be safer
By- Thalia Fuentes
The safety and comfort of students in school bathrooms is a critical issue that needs thoughtful consideration. At Palmer, the proposal to convert single-stall bathrooms into gender-neutral ones has sparked a debate, with strong arguments on both sides. While some advocate for building bathrooms to recommended standards, I believe that making these bathrooms gender-neutral may not address the core issues, and here’s why.
First, teaching student’s appropriate bathroom behavior is essential. It’s crucial to instill in them that bathrooms are not places for inappropriate activities, such as sexual behavior or bullying. Educators and administrators must emphasize respect and proper conduct, ensuring that bathrooms remain safe and organized environments. This approach can significantly reduce incidents of misconduct and create a more secure atmosphere for all students. Inappropriate behavior in school bathrooms is a significant concern. Instances of bullying, vandalism, drug use, and even sexual misconduct are not uncommon. For example, there have been cases where students have been harassed or intimidated in these spaces, leading to a feeling of insecurity. Addressing these behavioral issues requires a proactive approach. Schools should implement educational programs that emphasize respect and proper conduct. Peer mentoring programs, where older students guide younger ones on acceptable behavior, can be highly effective. Additionally, stricter disciplinary measures should be enforced to deter misconduct.
Second, having gender-neutral bathrooms can sometimes defeat the purpose of helping students feel more comfortable. As a girl, I would feel uneasy knowing that males could be present in the same bathroom. This discomfort is not just about personal preference but also about the potential for awkward and unsafe situations. For instance, if a couple were engaging in inappropriate behavior, it would be distressing and unsettling for anyone else using the facility. The debate over whether school bathrooms should be converted to gender-neutral ones has been a hot topic in recent years. While the idea of inclusivity is vital, it’s important to recognize that simply changing the designation of bathrooms is not a comprehensive solution. The safety and comfort of all students must be prioritized, and this involves addressing behavioral issues and ensuring well-maintained facilities.
Lastly, the primary goal of school bathrooms should be to provide a safe and organized environment for every student. Unfortunately, incidents of fights, vandalism, and general disorder are not uncommon in school bathrooms. Ensuring that bathrooms are clean, well-maintained, and equipped with functional locks on stalls is paramount. These measures can prevent unsafe situations and promote a sense of security among students. The design and maintenance of school bathrooms also play a crucial role in ensuring safety and comfort. Functional locks are just the beginning. Adequate lighting, cleanliness, and accessibility for students with disabilities are essential components of a well-designed bathroom. Schools should ensure that bathrooms are regularly cleaned and restocked with necessary supplies like soap and paper towels. Moreover, the inclusion of private stalls with floor-to-ceiling partitions can provide students with a greater sense of privacy and security
In conclusion, while building bathrooms to recommended standards is important, it is equally critical to address behavioral issues and ensure that the facilities meet the comfort and safety needs of all students. The safety and comfort of school bathrooms cannot be achieved by simply converting them to gender-neutral ones. A multi-pronged approach that combines improved bathroom design with behavioral interventions is necessary. Schools must prioritize the well-being of all students by addressing inappropriate behavior, ensuring well-maintained facilities, and considering the diverse perspectives of the school community. Only then can we create an environment where every student feels safe, respected, and comfortable by focusing on these aspects, Palmer can create a more welcoming and secure environment for everyone.
