School violence has become a major issue in American schools for the past couple years. The first major school shooting occurred in 1999 with the Columbine High School shooting taking place in Columbine, Colorado. Just recently on September 10, 2025 Evergreen High School in Jefferson County, Colorado was a victim of a shooting.
Students at the oldest school in Colorado Springs, Palmer High School, staged a protest outside City Hall downtown on September 17, 2025 to protest against school shootings. Over 200 students attended the protest to advocate for better gun laws to be safe in school.
I interviewed Michelangelo “Michey” Krewson who is 17 years old and a Senior at Palmer High School. During the protest he gave a speech against gun violence and played a major role in the protesting that occurred.
“I do not want to be shot. I would like to be safe at school, and I believe everyone has the right to feel safe in their schools.” Michey stated when I asked what gun violence matters to him.
No student should have to be worried if they’re not going to survive the school day or not. Or even come out alive and breathing. These shootings happen all over the United States and beyond and are most commonly done by students themselves.
“One of my friends who lives in Oklahoma, he was a part of a shooting,” Michey says when asked if he’s had any personal relations to gun violence and school shootings. “And I have seen the constant gun threats Palmer has been receiving since I was a freshman.”
With Palmer High School being located in the middle of downtown Colorado Springs, the school is at major threat and harm around the area. There are security guards who work for Palmer and you must show your ID before entering the school regardless of who you are. Palmer students are aware of this thus starting the protest outside City Hall telling the people in charge to implement stricter gun laws.

“I believe [Colorado Springs City Hall Council] should enforce gun registration ID’s and mental health screenings, and teach people to keep guns away from their children.” Michey said when asked what the council should do about gun violence.
This was a tremendous stance against gun violence. It is very powerful to see students advocating against this topic of injustice and even more powerful coming from students from the oldest school in Colorado Springs.
“Keep fighting for your right, Terrors, we got this!”
