Palmer’s Ultimate Frisbee

The rules are simple: find an open teammate across the field and launch the flying saucer to the end zone to score 7 points for your team. A flying disk can be thrown up to 400+ yards with the right amount of wind resistance and the appropriate throwing technique.

The Palmer Terrors Ultimate Frisbee team has been around for about 12 years now. Carrying on into this year, the Terrors’ Frisbee team has unfortunately been discontinued due to not having enough players to even form an official team. Is participation in sports slowly declining?

Many high schoolers every year begin to try out for their local schools sports team. Minimal spots are taken to form a specific team and year after year high school students continue to get cut from their high school sports team because they simply just are not strong, fast, or skilled enough to play at the high school level.

Is the participation in sports declining because of students being fearful of getting cut from the team? Not only is this statement true, but another reason as to why participation in sports has decreased is due to injury. Injury takes a huge part in sports and for an athlete to keep their body 100 percent injury free during their sports season is an extremely hard thing to do.

Taking injury and the fear of being cut from the team into account, and unlike football, Palmer’s Frisbee team has neither of these 2 negatives to offer. In Ultimate Frisbee being a low contact sport, there is very little room for injury and all the room for improvement. Palmer’s Frisbee team also doesn’t make any cuts to players who are not good enough to play, but simply works with the athletes on improving not only their throwing techniques, but also their running, catching, and defensive skills as well. These techniques also correlate very similarly to other sports as well. Another pro that frisbee has to offer is that there are many pro and collegiate teams that would offer good money for players to come and play for their program.

If this is something that you wish to pursue, please stop by Mr. McNeil’s room (231) for more information on how many players are available to play, and we hope to see you out there if enough players are gathered for the team!
