On Tuesday, October 28, Palmer volleyball wrapped up their regular season games with a spirited Pink Out against Cañon City High School, honoring Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
After a long season filled with many hard earned wins, the gym was decked out in pink, with fans, players, and coaches showing their support for a cause that hits a spot in the community. October has been acknowledged annually as Breast Cancer Awareness month since 1985. It was established by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries (now AstraZeneca) to raise awareness about breast cancer and encourage early detection and screening
Genevieve Butterfield, captain of C- team volleyball, and JV swinger said this when I asked her what this pink out game meant to her “The pink out game meant a lot to me. It got to honor people who survived breast cancer. The pink shows unity in our community! This brought many people together!“
Beyond the competition, the Pink Out Game carried a deeper meaning. Players wore pink accessories and fans filled the stands to raise awareness for breast cancer research and to support survivors.
Facing Canon city strong, despite a hard-fought effort, the team came up short, marking the end of regular season game, but earning a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2016!
“This season was great overall! I got to play with the people I love. I got to meet new faces and build relationships I never thought I would, “ Genevieve said when I asked her how she felt about the season overall.
As the season closes, the team looks back on months of growth, teamwork, and community spirit. This game served as a fitting finale, a blend of competition and compassion that showcased the heart of Palmer High School both on and off the court.
Congratulations to our seniors; Talise Soppe-cope, Savvy Herrera, Talise Ogaz Almeida, and Kyneisha Horn. As you all will be missed dearly.
“The game of volleyball brings happiness and friendship into my life. I can’t imagine not playing with these girls.”
