At Palmer High School, the clubs are diverse and immersive for anyone interested in being part of something. One of those clubs is boxing club, which is exactly what the name suggests. The club runs from 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM every Tuesday and Thursday at Triple Threat Boxing Gym at 2518 Airport Rd.
The expenses are not cheap, however. Edgar Chanez, a regular member, stated it to be “$70 a month.” But even with that in mind, the club can be really fun and engaging. While in the gym, many focus on training and some members even use fighting as a hobby outside the club, although not all do.
On a regular day in the club, you warm up with jump rope and footwork. You will either do physical workouts, bag training, or spar, which seems to be very popular among the members. You will also be doing training that helps with your core, neck, arms, and legs. As for the materials, Izhar Gomez, the member who runs the club, shared, “we use boxing gloves, punching bags, dumbbells, and other materials that help with training.” Everything stays in the gym. Gomez also revealed that in the gym, they have learned “sequence of punches 1-6, proper stance, control of position, self control during sparring, warm ups for footwork, shadowboxing, jump rope tricks, footwork, speed, and power management.”
Boxing is said to create an air of discipline as it can be very productive, and if you stick to it, can pay off in more ways than one. It can become a career and push you beyond your limits and in the end, help with your physical fitness and mentality. Gomez said, “To be in boxing is wonderful, it’s a way to create and implement discipline doing something productive.”
Although it may seem tough, multiple sources describe the participants there, no matter their grade or class, as calm, funny, and nice so there is always someone there who is happy to help. You do not need any prior knowledge of boxing to join.
The workouts themselves are tough but help improve skill, strength, and ability, and as previously mentioned, many are happy to help. For more information, contact Izhar Gomez.
