Polar bears have been declared a high risk for extinction, due to habitat loss. The loss of ice will force polar bears to spend more time on land which increases risk of starvation for polar bears.
Back in 2019 the Bramble Cay melomys went extinct due to habitat loss caused by human-induced climate change. We need to do everything in our power to prevent this before another animal goes extinct due to our selfish choices.
We are taking away polar bears’ homes, their resources for hunting, and we are slowly getting rid of them. The lack of prey impacts the female polar bears, it leads to lower cub reproduction and survival.
The main reason for rapid climate change in the arctic is human activities that are increasing heat trapping GHG (greenhouse gas) in the atmosphere and global warming. This is very dangerous for polar bears. Research will show you the reason behind these dangerously rapid changes.
This is a topic that just isn’t brought up enough for my liking. If we are the cause for this, are we ever going to open our eyes and put a stop to this? We need to do something quick, we are killing our animals and planet slowly.
A few things we can do to not be a part of climate change is reducing, reusing, repairing items, walking, recycling, and lastly we can start advocating for systematic policy changes. Will people finally take this seriously? It’s not only affecting our animals but it’s affecting our planet, polar bears wouldn’t be suffering like this if we did something sooner.
